DeRosa on DL, Burriss Back in Bigs
Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury broke the news today that Mark DeRosa has an inflamed left wrist (the one that kept him out all of last season) and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list tomorrow to allow time for Emmauel Burriss to join the team.
This may seem like a damper to lose DeRosa again early in the season, but now the Giants front office will get to see how Burriss does in the Majors.
Burriss has been on the Giants before, playing seven games in 2010, 61 in 2009 and 95 in 2008. In his major league career (163 games) he is hitting .264/.329/.302 with one home run and 31 RBIs. Hardly impressive.
What is impressive is his speed.
In those same 163 major league games, he has 24 stolen bases in 33 attempts. This year, however, in 16 games in triple-A Fresno, he has 15 steals in 18 attempts. 11 AAA teams don't have as many steals as Burriss alone so far this season.
His hitting in AAA has also been impressive so far, hitting .344/.423/.426 with five doubles and team-leading 15 runs.
It'll be fun to watch this kid try to climb back on this Giants roster because last night's game showed us how much speed can contribute to victories.
